Maureen O'Hara

Maureen FitzSimons (17 August 1920 to 24 October 2015) was an Irish singer, actress and performer who gained fame in Hollywood in the 1940s and into the 1960s. Her natural redhead nature has made her a favorite choice for strong but smart heroines in Westerns and adventure films. Charles Laughton, an actor who was the first to see her talent as a star, took her to Hollywood. In numerous instances, she also worked with John Ford, longtime friend John Wayne and John Ford. O'Hara was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, in a Catholic family, and aspired to become an actor from a very young age. She began her training with the Rathmines Theatre Company from the age of 10 and was at the Abbey Theatre as young as the age of 14. Screen test was offered to her, however it did not go as well as expected. Charles Laughton, however was able to see potential and made arrangements for her to be a part of his production Alfred HitchcockĆ¢€™s Jamaica Inn (1939). RKO Pictures gave her a contract. After that, she enjoyed an extensive and lucrative career. She was referred to as "the Queen of Technicolor". In films such as How Green Was My Valley (1941) that was her first collaboration The Black Swan with Tyrone Power (1942), The Spanish Main with Sinbad the Sailor (1947), the Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street (1947), with John Payne (and Natalie Wood), and Comanche Territory (1950), she was in. The first time she was seen was in Rio Grande (1950), along with John Wayne (the actor with whom she's most closely associated). The Quiet Man (1952), The Wings of Eagles (57), and McLintock followed. (1963) as well as Big Jake (1971). Wayne was so good in her chemistry with O'Hara that some believed they were in a marriage. In the 60s, O'Hara gradually took on more motherly roles as she grew older. She appeared in films like The Deadly Companions (1961), The Parent Trap (1961) and The Rare Breed (1966). O'Hara left the industry in the year 1971. She returned to the film industry 20 years later and appeared in John Candy (1991).
