Yichieng was born 21/11/1985. Chieng is currently a senior correspondent on The
Daily Show on Comedy Central. He also developed and is the star of the sitcom
Ronny Chieng International Student, which debuted on ABC Australia (Australia)
in the year 2017. Chieng was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to an Malaysian
Chinese family. He grew up in both Singapore and the United States, living in
Manchester, New Hampshire from 1989 to 1994. Chieng performed alongside Trevor
Noah at a Melbourne comedy festival in 2013. A few years later Chieng was
selected to be a candidate for the correspondent position for The Daily Show,
which Noah hosts. Chieng was selected as one of the top 10 comics to watch in
Variety's July 2016 issue. In October 2016, Chieng joined The Daily Show to
discuss the controversy surrounding a Jesse Watters Fox News segment some
believed was racist. Chieng airs an expletive-filled critique of the segment on
Fox News that was deemed conservative by many. He also visited NewYork City's
Chinatown where Watters had joked about the residents. The viral video received
media coverage in the Washington Post and Slate. Washington Post and Slate In
his youth, Chieng was a Singapore Sea Scout. Chieng has not been able to get
citizenship or permanent residency in Australia despite living in Australia for
10 years. Chieng made an absurd joke about being cynophobic during 2018's Daily
Show. However Chieng later said that he is "100% not afraid of dogs"
in an interview.
